SCENIC WINTER DRIVES & SWISS ALPINE TRAIN
DAY 2 — TOUR 1 — SWISS ENGADINE VALLEY
After storing the bags in the morning, press the "GO" button on your pre-programmed GPS unit to start your winter driving adventure. Within a few minutes from the hotel you have reached the beautiful countryside surrounding Zurich.
The carefully selected scenic route will take you over soft rolling hills past wide meadows, frozen lakes and what is arguably Switzerland's most scenic stretch of highway.
To reach the Swiss Engadine Valley travel the spectacular Julier Route with the highest point on the mountain pass at an elevation of 2.284m (7,493ft) above the sea level. Enjoy the wide, sweeping curves while the landscape passes through this wild and bare scenery covered in snow.
For the next few days your will be based at St. Moritz at the south of the Alps. With more than 322 sunny days per year the region is famous for its stimulating meteorologic conditions known as Champagne climate.
5* Superior Kronenhof, Pontresina
DAY 3 — TOUR 2 — LOOP INTO ITALY
Stay a second night at your hotel at Saint Moritz and get to drive the panoramic winter routes of the Swiss Engadine Valley with a short loop into the Italian South Tyrol.
Here in Italy, under the calm waters of the man-made Lake Reschensee an entire submerged village is hidden. Only the dominant bell tower of the local church reminds us until today of the lost place on the ground of the lake. With a bit of luck the lake is entirely frozen over and you can walk to the tower for a really epic photo.
After driving over the spectacular Fuorn Alpine Pass crossing Switzerland's only National Park reach St. Moritz in the afternoon. Back here enjoy the spa at your hotel and have a nice dinner.
5* Superior Kronenhof, Pontresina
DAY 4 — TO ANDERMATT
OPTION I — DRIVE YOURSELF
Take the Julier Pass out of St. Moritz and the transit route to Andermatt. The motorway takes you also trough the 16.9 kilometres long Gotthard road tunnel opened in 1980.
OPTION II — GLACIER EXPRESS TRAIN
Leave your car parked in the garage and make your way to the St. Moritz train station to catch the legendary Glacier Express. Since 1930 the Express between St. Moritz and Zermatt is the most comfortable and luxurious train of the world-famous Rhaetian Railway operating since 1889. With a 384-kilometre network of tracks the largest Alpine railway in Switzerland.
The railway lines blend harmoniously into the wild nature and turn every ride on the Alpine railway into a scenic experience. Especially during the winter month you enjoy spectacular views without any distractions. Get to ride on the most spectacular section of the Glacier Express Route including the highest point, the Oberalp Pass, the majestic Rhine Gorge and the iconic Landwasser Viaduct (4:45 h). Since 2008 a UNESCO World Heritage route.
Once you've reached Andermatt spend the afternoon at the spa. With just 1,500 inhabitants, it has the enchanting atmosphere of a romantic little mountain village. Look forward to picturesque alleys, churches, outdoor staircases and pretty chalets made from stone and wood.
Meanwhile we have transported your luggage and car to Andermatt for the next leg of your journey.
5* The Chedi Hotel, Andermatt
DAY 5 — TOUR 3 — BIG 3 PANORAMA
In the morning drive past Lake Lucerne — the lake with the greatest scenic variety in the country and enjoy lunch at Interlaken before heading via the iconic waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen towards another highlight of this trip:
Mount Shilthorn is expecting you with the unique panorama over the "BIG3" of the Swiss Alps — the snowcapped mountains: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Mont Blanc massif in France and Germany's Black Forest.
For the night you will be based at Gstaad. Probably the best-known ski resort in Switzerland, Gstaad is renowned as much for its ski slopes as for its luxury hotels and boutiques.
5* Superior Grand Hotel Park, Gstaad
DAY 6 — TOUR 4 — GLACIER 3000
Again no need for ski's to experience one of the main attractions of todays trip. Only a short drive from your hotel in Gstaad at Glacier 3000 you will enjoy a glorious 360 degree winter panorama.
The medieval town of Gruyères in the heart of Switzerland will be your next destination. Inside the 13th century castle find a museum covering eight centuries of the architecture, history and culture of the region. In the second, smaller castle in Gruyères at St. Germain is the HR Giger museum. Giger designed the horrific fantasy figures for the Hollywood film "Alien".
The scenic roads of the Bernese Highlands will take you through an enchating Swiss winter scenery back to Zurich. The car pick up is arranged and you can make plans for your evening.
