EXTEND YOUR TRIP
TAKE A JOURNEY ON THE GLACIER EXPRESS
The full train journey you will cross 291 bridges and pass through 91 tunnels, along untouched landscapes, deep ravines up to 2,033 metres.
GLACIER EXPRESS - LEG 1
ST. MORITZ TO ANDERMATT
The first section overlaps with the Bernina Express and is the most scenic stretch of the entire Glacier Express Route. Known as the slowest express train in the world it travels through a mostly narrow valley, crossing the spectacular curved Landwasser viaduct.
You will experience dramatic landscapes of the 'Swiss Grand Canyon' carved by the river deep into the white rocks. Towards the long and steady descent along the Rhine valley to Chur you will reach the lowest point of the Glacier Express route.
From here the Glacier Express winds its way upwards to 2034 m, the highest point of this journey on top of the Oberalp Pass. The bare landscape up here is usually covered in snow from November to April. The road is closed during that period.
Stay at Andermatt in the Swiss Alps
GLACIER EXPRESS - LEG 2 ANDERMATT TO ZERMATT
The journey ends at the car free mountain village of Zermatt, at an altitude of 1605 m. Here you will admire the most photographed mountain in the world, the Matterhorn.
Only since 1982, a tunnel to Realp is bypassing the Furka Pass near Andermatt and making the train service reliable for all season including winter.
Continues west into the Upper Rhone valley. The V-shaped valley is very narrow at times and reached an altitude of 1366 metres near Oberwald before the Glacier Express crosses the river Rhone.
The Matter valley after the town of Visp and is quite narrow at many places, with massive rock walls rising up to well over 4000 m. The highest peaks of the Swiss Alps can be found in this region.
