THE GERMAN ALPINE ROAD IN BAVARIA
GERMAN ALPINE ROAD LEG 1 DRIVE TO SALZBURG / LAKE FUSCHL
Leave Munich via a stretch of German Autobahn. Soon you will reach Germany's oldest holiday route — this will be your first leg of the scenic German Alpine Road in Bavaria running parallel to the Austrian border. Stop at "Eagle's Nest" — Hitler's former retreat and visit the WWII documentation centre at Obersalzberg to educate yourself about the dark past of this beautiful region.
Visit the 900-year-old Hohenwerfen Castle surrounded by an extraordinary landscape before you continue on your scenic route to stop every now and then for a number of fantastic view-points and lakes. The panorama road through the Berchtesgaden Alps will be your gateway to stay at:
A — the heart of the baroque town of Salzburg in Austria. Take a nice evening walk through the Old Town.
B — 25-min from Salzburg at 5* Superior Schloss Fuschl Hotel; a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa on the shore of Lake Fuschl. Nestled in Austria’s "Sound of Music" region.
GERMAN ALPINE ROAD LEG 2 NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE DRIVE
After enjoying the genuine Tyrolean hospitality at Seefeld you have again the choice:
A — the iconic Hahntennjoch Pass literally carved into the rock with constantly changing scenery (Jun-Oct)
B — the scenic but sometimes busy Fern Pass for short direct connection between Bavaria and Tyrol (all year)
Towards the end of both passes you will cross the border into Bavaria in Germany and pick up the second part of the German High Alpine Road dotted with palaces that Bavaria's last and very eccentric king Ludwig II left behind.
Visit two of his most iconic palaces including Neuschwanstein Castle. Even Disney's Cinderella castle was modelled after the romantic 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill.
After your visit the last bit of this tour will take you once again onto the good old German Autobahn back to Munich. You can make further plans for the evening, while we pick up the car from your hotel.
